Yudong Shen infuses his Asian brush paintings with color and contrast to create landscapes that reflect both China and Minnesota.
Yudong Shen infuses his Asian brush paintings with color and contrast, a practice more common to western painting than the 2,000-year-old discipline in which he works. Traditionally depicting landscapes, figures, or flower-and-bird, Asian brush painting is recognizable for its use of black ink and water on rice paper. Yudong’s work combines these traditional tools and subjects with influences of the Minnesota landscape he’s been steeped in for more than 10 years.
